  1. Hey folks – Ciarán (Director/Writer) for Callus here! Thanks so much for checking out this Irish folk-horror short film of ours, I really hope you enjoy it. It's great to be back showing on ALTER after my last short, Terrible Things, did the rounds a few years ago.

Callus is, in a nutshell, a story of parental love against the backdrop of Irish pagan sensibilities as seen through a Lovecraftian-tinged lens. It was funded in full by Screen Ireland (the Irish Film Board) and was an opportunity for me and the team to embark on a larger kind of story in preparation for future feature film production. It's a jam-packed short by design – an entire package all its own with setup and resolution, but its also a kind of 'proof of concept' for a larger lore and world I'm keen to explore further in future projects where Celtic mythology and eldritch leanings meet in the middle.

Please do ask me any questions you want answered and I'll do my best to keep on top of things. Happy to engage with one and all. I'm currently abroad at the moment so I might be a bit delayed responding to everyone, but responding to everyone is exactly what I hope to do.

    Cheers!

  2. High infant mortality, crops not growing, animal refusing to eat, and birth defects? We sure there isnt like a chemical or radiological leak lol? Get the water supply checked or something

  3. Ooohhh don't pitty him now for getting his face scratch he started it and attack her family..she just wanted to have a normal life..im not killing her period..let's live in the woods together

  4. This was so sad. The story was scary because how realistic the response of the towns people to times of stress. The poor girl and father.

  5. Omg. All he had to do was leave. Stop trying to force dogs to be civilized. They killed him cuz theyre savages. Why would he want his daughter around such people. Just leave. Big freakin world. This was his war with acceptance and he used her as the focus of it. This is something parents often do. Children are born into the conflicts that tear the parents apart. Like i said, he coulda just left. 😮😢

  6. I know this is fictional, but this is why blind faith is so stupid and dangerous. How many people have been murdered or otherwise attacked in history because of crap like this. It WAS a REALLY cool arm design! Very good short film! 🙂

  7. I actually saw the curse as a very different thing. I thought the town itself was the curse.
The thing is, no one ever let these children grow up, and the town has been deteriorating. This young woman wasn't part of the town; she was hidden away and isolated from the town the entire time and have little to no interaction with the town. And then the flower dying at the end, I don't think it was necessarily showing or representing death. I think it was about a cycle of renewal that she was never given the opportunity for – nor have any of the other children.

So maybe I'm reaching to the tallest bookshelf with my best footstool and still only able to brush it with my fingertips, but that's what I thought. Could be wrong, though, and it's on the bottom shelf and I'm in need of a serious face-palming.
